PM-SSY: India’s ₹5,070 Crore Floating Solar Leap

In a major boost to India’s renewable energy landscape, the Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) with an outlay of ₹5,070 crore. Managed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the scheme aims to install 5,000 MW of floating solar capacity paired with 10,000 MWh of co-located energy storage (2-hour minimum discharge). Projects will be sanctioned between FY2026–27 and FY2030–31, with funding support extending to FY2032–33. By leveraging water bodies for solar generation, PM-SSY will enhance land-use efficiency and stabilize grid integration.
